Born and raised in San Francisco to Chinese immigrant parents, Betty grew up in a one-room apartment behind her family’s dry cleaning business in the Parkside District. From the age of eight, she helped manage the books because her parents did not speak English fluently. A proud graduate of San Francisco public schools, including Lowell High School, and later UC Berkeley and Golden Gate University, Betty’s story is deeply rooted in our city’s working-class immigrant communities. Her lifelong connection to San Francisco — including family members who still live here — gives her an authentic understanding of the challenges and aspirations of San Franciscans and all Californians.
With more than 35 years of dedicated public service, Betty Yee has built an impressive record of fiscal leadership and accountability across California politics. She served two terms as State Controller, acting as the chief fiscal officer for the world’s fifth-largest economy, where she uncovered billions in mismanaged spending, protected public pensions, ensured timely payments without borrowing, and championed transparency in government. Prior to that, she served on the Board of Equalization and held key budget roles under Governor Gray Davis. Known for her integrity, intelligence, and no-nonsense approach, Betty brings the experience, expertise, and steady hand needed to tackle California’s budget challenges, restore affordability, and deliver effective governance.
